About Malda

Malda is a small city of Malda district of West Bengal which is famous for mangoes. It is also known by many as English Bazaar town and is linked with Malda district in every manner. While Malda is the 2nd largest city of North Bengal, and district headquarters, Malda is the seventh largest city in West Bengal. This city is said to be founded by the British, who later named it as the 'Engelzavad'. The Old Malda was actually the capital city of the Gour and Banga, and the important rivers that flow via this city are the Mahananda and Kalindi, as well as the Ganga and Fulahar. Furthermore, Malda became popular due to the improvements done to the city of Old Malda.

History of Malda

Malda was formed during in the year 1813 by carving out parts of Purnia, Dinajpur, and Rajshahi districts. Treasury bench was set up in 1832 and magisterial office in 1859. This entire region later became the part of Rajshahi division, somewhere between 1876 to 1905, and further became a part of Bhagalpur Division. During the year 1905, the city was then handed over to the Rajshahi Division, but Malda remained in this division till the year 1947. Few days before the independence it was administered by magistrate of East Pakistan whose authority ceased to exist once Red-cliff line was drawn making it a part of West Bengal.

This city is situated at the 25.00° N and 88.15° E, with a total elevation of 17 meters. The city is established over the western bank of the River Mahananda. The temperature can be reached as high as 46 °C during May and June (Day time), and is reduced to as low as 4° C (Overnight) during December and January.
